John and Sarah had worked in America when they were young adults and had returned to Ireland. The early twentieth century was tough in Ireland and Northern Ireland due to religion and politics of the day. John and Sarah decided to leave Ireland and strike out for America with their family. On 18 April 1925 the family left for America aboard the S.S. Tuscania (Link to Record). They arrived in America on 28 April 1925.
Sadly, 10 months after arriving in America Sarah passed away. One year after Sarah’s death on 24 Jan 1927, John’s sister Susan Margaret (Aunt Susie) McKinley came to the America to bring Bertha back to Ireland (Link to Record). Four years after arriving in America, John and Harold returned to Ireland in June 1929 (Link to Record). Willam and Edna had established themselves in America and remained in New York City.
